Bollywood night For Slumdog Charity

>> Wednesday, April 22, 2009

THE glitz and glamour of Bollywood is on its way to Jaipur Restaurant in Nantwich next week.

On Bank Holiday Sunday May 3, the restaurant on Welsh Row will be transformed into a Bombay mix of colourful costume, dazzling dance and fine Indian food.

The event is being organised by Railway Children – a charity that supports street children just like those in the film Slumdog Millionaire.

Only 50 tickets are available at £30 each for the Bollywood bonanza, which includes a three-course culinary feast of everything from Bhaji to Balti and Bangladeshi food.

There will be also be table entertainment, a charity auction, and foot-tapping live music.

Railway Children is hoping that the fundraiser will raise hundreds of pounds for the charity so that the rags will truly become riches for Slumdog kids.

Naz Helal from Jaipur said: “We are very excited about the charity night.

“Bollywood is the popular name used to describe the film industry in India.

“But today its reach has exceeded national, cultural and linguistic boundaries.

“We will help bring a taste of that exciting and thrilling world to our guests at Jaipur.

“We want to give our diners a culinary delight and Bollywood experience they will never forget.”

Rob Capener, communications and marketing manager at the Sandbach charity, said: “Having worked in India, the UK, East Africa, Russia and Latin America, Railway Children has been reaching out to street children around the world for more than a decade.

“Our primary aim as an organisation is to change the lives of children living on the streets – it’s about getting to street kids before the streets get to them.

“We aim to save them from the dangers of crime, drugs, prostitution and instead offering them shelter, a safe living environment, healthcare and education.

“The film Slumdog Millionaire – based in India – has really helped to boost awareness of our work as it illustrates the kind of children we help. So we thought a Bollywood Night would be a great theme for the evening.

“We are bringing a flavour of India to Nantwich, celebrating the country’s tradition while raising money for charity.

“We hope that businessmen and women in the town will perhaps turn up in a Sari and join in the fun. It will be a great night out for the Bank Holiday weekend.”

Auction prizes include a day out at a Crewe Alex match for an entire classroom of school pupils. Tickets for the Bollywood event are available online from www.railwaychildren.org.uk.
